PhD project Title:
Bioprospecting of Mediterranean flora: researching natural products with medicinal and nutritional value

Research summary:
The subject of this research project is the phytochemical and biological study of endemic plants belonging to different families to exploit the biodiversity of Mediterranean flora following by a bioprospecting approach. Bioprospecting is “the search for plant and animal species from which medicinal drugs and other commercially valuable compounds can be obtained”. According to this idea, the study of endemic plants in the continuous search for new herbal drugs, herbal preparations and food within the Mediterranean biodiversity is of pivotal importance to enhance and preserve this unique genetic resource, exploit its potential economic value and improve human well-being. The experimental steps of the project include the selection of plants of Mediterranean area, belonging to different genus for their chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic, traditional, and medicinal features; the extraction of plant material with solvents of different polarity; the isolation of active constituents by chromatographic processes such as HPLC, CPC, GC, flash chromatography, gel filtration chromatography; the chemical characterization of the isolated compounds using NMR, MS and UV techniques; and the evaluation of their biological activity, as leads for the design of new drugs.
